Despite the rapid progress in the management of patients with atrial fibrillation, this remains one of the major causes of stroke, heart failure, sudden death, and cardiovascular morbidity worldwide. Furthermore, the number of patients with AF is predicted to rise significantly in the upcoming years. Our aim was to review the latest guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and highlight the most important messages about the treatment of atrial fibrillation.
