Summary

The traditional concept, that tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is less important than left-sided valvular diseases had persisted until recently, when studies identified TR as a progressive entity associated with a poor survival. As the tricuspid valve apparatus has a complex spatial structure, three-dimensional imaging may help to assess the severity and to evaluate the consequences of TR. Corrective treatment of TR is tricuspid valve surgery, however current guidelines do not provide exact recommendations either for the proper patient selection or for the optimal timing of the surgical intervention due to the lack of sufficient data from randomized controlled trials.
