Summary

The American hypertension recommendation issued in 2017 changed the definition and treatment of hypertension. The new limit is 130/80 mmHg. The first stage of hypertension ranges to 140/90 mmHg and requires primarily non-drug therapy, but depending on the magnitude of cardiovascular risk, it can be supplemented with drug treatment. Above 140/90 mmHg, non-drug and drug treatment is required, the latter being preferably a fixed-dose combination. The recommendation was made in the spirit of a strong reduction of cardiovascular events.
