Summary
The cardiovascular effects of cancer treatments can be varied. Over the last decade, significant developments were observed in the detection, prevention, and treatment of cardiotoxic side effects. This integrative field is being addressed by a new discipline, cardio-oncology. In this publication, the author reviews the association of tumour treatments with atrial fibrillation, QT segment prolongation and ventricular arrhythmias. He provides insights into the occurrence and pathomechanism of cardiotoxic arrhythmias considering the latest literature and describes the most recent diagnostic and therapeutic principles in light of new cardio-oncology recommendations. Close collaboration between oncologists and cardiologists is of paramount importance in the advanced care of cancer patients, both during: treatment planning, the treatment, and the follow-up period. This can significantly improve the long-term survival and quality of life of cancer patients.
