Summary
Over the last decade, subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillators (S-ICDs) have become suitable alternatives to single-chamber transvenous ICD systems in selected patients. However, there is limited experience with patients with S-ICDs who require a sternotomy. There are also concerns about electrode damage during cardiac surgery, electrode placement after sternal closure, and potential interference between the electrode and the sternal closure wires.
